Our History
The Winthrop Carter House, constructed eleven years prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, stands as one of the oldest and continuously operating inns in the Granite State. In 1765, Lieutenant Winthrop Carter, a Revolutionary War veteran, erected the main house, later becoming a licensed innkeeper in 1790. During the early colonial era, inns and taverns held great importance as prominent gathering places in the development of the burgeoning nation, following meeting houses. Innkeepers’ licenses were exclusively granted to esteemed individuals, and Winthrop Carter exemplified this as an honorable citizen who held various offices of trust and owned extensive lands in Boscawen and Canterbury.
Over the years, the Winthrop Carter House has undergone various transformations, including being known as the Old Homestead Inn and Tea Room, as well as the renowned Kettle and Crane Restaurant and Inn. These establishments garnered wide recognition as charming and historic inns in the picturesque village of Boscawen, NH, leaving an indelible mark on the region.
